This article will guide the systems administrator through setting up WordTricks on workstations (or workstation images) that are in a Restricted Microsoft Active Directory Environment.

WordTricks on Restricted Active Directory Workstations

On workstations where the user is restricted from installing or updating applications, WordTricks must be installed using a Microsoft Installer Package (MSI). This package is available at:

http://www.wordtricks.com/downloads/Setup_WordTricks_Workstation.msi

Why Use an MSI?

WordTricks uses several components that are Self Registering ActiveX COM objects. When these components are installed on a workstation, they are not fully ready for use.

In a non-restricted environment, these components register themselves the first time they are used and when (or if) they are updated. However, if a restricted user is the first to use one of them, they cannot register themselves and an error occurs.

The WordTricks MSI package installs the components and executes them with a registration flag.

Steps to Install the Package

For each workstation:

  1. Remove any previous installations of WordTricks.
  2. Execute the Setup_WordTricks_Workstation.msi package either from Active Directory or directly from the workstation as an administrative user.
  3. Import your WordTricks network settings via the Silent.reg file in [Your WordTricks Network Folder]\Setup.
  4. Run the WordTricks startup (WTX_Start.exe) from the local WordTricks installation folder. (Usually C:\Program Files\WordTricks)

Note: These steps are normally executed via a command file. ([Your WordTricks Network Folder]\Setup\SilentInstall.cmd) This file is unique to each network installation and may be altered by any knowledgeable systems administrator.

Updates:

Routine WordTricks updates must also be handled differently in a Restricted Active Directory environment. See the article KB-MSIUPDATE.htm for more information.
