Multiple Numbering Schemes
What is meant by Multiple Numbering Schemes?
Within one document there are often distinct segments or sections. Commonly, these contain numbered paragraphs that are different in purpose and style. These are multiple numbering schemes.
One of the most common approaches to using Word's native numbering is to use "Heading" styles, which links a numbered list to a specific paragraph style. This approach works well for documents with only one numbering scheme but becomes problematic if the numbered paragraphs must be styled differently and/or numbered differently.
ListTricks creates its own paragraph styles for each numbered list in the document. This makes it easy to style and number schemes differently, making it easy to distinguish between and manage multiple numbered schemes.
To add multiple Schemes use the following steps:
Open a document that already has a numbering list, or see Creating a Numbered List to create a document with an existing list.
![]()
Move the insertion point to the paragraph within the document where the new numbering scheme is desired.
![]()
Click the Schemes
button on the ListTricks button bar to gain access to the Schemes Pop-Up.
The Schemes dialog box appears:

![]()
Choose the New Scheme option to allow access to the Scheme Selection screen.
The Scheme Selection screen appears:

![]()
Select the desired Scheme and Numbering Pattern.
![]()
Click the OK button to apply the new numbering scheme to the selected paragraph.
Note: The Schemes button has now changed to reflect the last scheme chosen. Clicking the Schemes button presents the Schemes Pop-Up, which has also changed.
The Schemes button displays the last scheme chosen:
![]()
The Schemes Pop-Up now reflects the two lists in the document:

Selecting From Multiple Schemes
Since the Schemes button displays the last scheme used, applying level numbers from that scheme can be easily applied by clicking the level number desired for the paragraph.
However, to apply numbering from a different scheme, the Scheme Pop-Up List must be used.
To select another Scheme use the following steps:
![]()
Click the Schemes
button to access the Schemes Pop-Up list.
The Schemes Pop-Up List appears:

Note: The last scheme used is highlighted.
![]()
Select the appropriate scheme to apply it to the paragraph.

This will apply level 1 of the selected scheme to the paragraph (unless your personal options are altered.)
Note: The Schemes button will change to reflect the last scheme used.
