Though there are many numbering schemes available, you may need to make adjustments for specific needs. There are a few ways to do this.
Modifying Styles
When a scheme is applied to your document, paragraph styles are created for each level in the scheme. These paragraph styles can be modified to alter the paragraph numbering. For example, using Normal View, the style for a numbered paragraph can be identified and edited.

Note: Details of modifying paragraph styles and numbering are beyond the scope of this document. For further reading, see "Word 2003 For Law Firms" from Payne Consulting Group, published by Prima Tech.
Whether modifying an existing scheme or selecting a new one, many options are available from the preview box for each level.
Either modify/edit a Document Scheme, or when selecting a System or Personal Scheme:
Move the mouse pointer over the paragraph number or over the paragraph body in the preview box. Click on the paragraph to make modifications.

The Number, The Lead-In and the Paragraph Editing all in one!

The above figure has level one selected for modification. Notice the three areas the user has available for modification: Numbering Style, Lead-in Sentence Style, and Paragraph Body Style. Click all options that you wish to apply to the Number, the Lead-in and the Paragraph Body, then click OK when finished.
Clicking the Paragraph to make modifications in the Level 2 paragraph body presents the same menu as above, but will have level two selected (surrounded by a box).
Click all options that you wish to apply to the Numbering, the Lead-in Sentence and Paragraph Body. Click OK when finished.
Note: The scheme has now been modified, which
is indicated in the lower left corner of the preview screen. Most options are
reflected in the preview box. You may wish to save the scheme as a Personal
Scheme or simply click Change and it will change the appropriate styles in the
document.
These modifications can be applied by clicking the OK button on the Scheme Selections screen.
ListTricks recognizes when a scheme has been modified and prompts the user to save it. These are stored in your Personal Schemes for later use.
Preview of the Record Modified dialog box:

If the modifications are simple and/or just for this document, click Cancel to apply the modifications without saving them. However, if the modifications will be used again, click Save to save the Scheme to your Personal Schemes.
Note: For Personal Schemes, clicking the Modified
indicator will also save the Scheme. This feature is not available for System
Schemes.
ListTricks Schemes may also be modified based on the characteristics of an existing numbering scheme in your document. This is particularly useful when duplicating the characteristics of a document from an outside source.
This is done by using ListTricks to modify the existing list. See Numbering Options: Changing an Entire Scheme.
Important Note: The document must contain a valid outline numbered list, and the insertion point must be within a paragraph of the desired list.
ListTricks automatically reads the existing automatic numbering within the document. Notice the Document Scheme Tab that was not present on the previous Scheme Selection dialog box.

The user may either modify the Document Scheme or select a new one from System Schemes or Personal Schemes by clicking the respective tabs.
Any of the schemes used, whether personal or system, can be modified and managed by your system administrator. If you (or others) create Schemes that should be shared, please check with your system administrator.
If you need additional schemes or need existing schemes to be permanently modified, please see your system administrator.
