Creating a Numbered List
To create a numbered list using ListTricks use the following steps:
Note: To best use the example outlined here, start with a document that has a few paragraphs of unnumbered text.
Tip: You can create sample text by opening Word and typing =rand(20) + Enter at the starting cursor. (20 indicates the number of paragraphs)

For Word versions prior to Word 2007, display the ListTricks Tool Bar by clicking the ListTricks
button on the WordTricks Tool Bar or by pressing Shift+Alt+P on most
systems.
The ListTricks Toolbar appears:
Note: By default, the ListTricks toolbar will appear. If it was already visible, it will disappear.
When the ListTricks
button is clicked, the ListTricks Schemes dialog box will also automatically
be displayed so that you may select a new scheme.
If the ListTricks Tool Bar is displayed, you may also start the ListTricks Schemes
dialog box by clicking the Schemes
button.
Word 2007
Word 2007 and later displays a "Floating" ListTricks bar at all times. This bar can be positioned as needed, and expanded or contracted.
Expanded:

Display the Scheme Selection dialog by clicking the "New Numbering Scheme" selector.

From the Numbering Schemes List, select the "Standard Outline
with TOC" scheme.
Note: The Preview Box, the Number Pattern Box , and the Comments Box change depending on the Scheme selected.
Click OK
to apply the scheme to the current paragraph in your document.
The Schemes
button changes to reflect the last selected scheme:
Note: The paragraph is now numbered like the first level in the Preview Box (or Level 1), and the Schemes Button has changed to reflect the Scheme you are using.

Move the insertion point to the next paragraph within your document, or type a new paragraph.
To apply a similar number to this new paragraph (also Level
1), click the Level 1
button on the ListTricks tool bar. On most systems, you may also use Ctrl+Alt+1.
Note: The paragraph is now numbered with the next number in the numbering sequence.
Use this method to apply any level number to any paragraph.
Note: If the options in Word are set to do so, the TAB key will change a numbered paragraph's level. If the insertion point is immediately following the number, pressing the TAB key increases the level where Shift+TAB decreases the level.

To turn numbering off, click the No Numbering
button on the ListTricks tool bar, or press Ctrl+Alt+0 (zero) on most
systems.
Note: Though Word will automatically turn off numbering by pressing ENTER twice (in some cases), it is not the suggested method because it leaves that paragraph formatted in the same style as all of the other numbered paragraphs. This could be very confusing for users who are not comfortable with Word styles.

To resume numbering at another location in the document, place
the insertion point in the desired paragraph and click the Level
button appropriate for that paragraph.
